Join Troy Public Library in the Niles-Barnard House at Troy Historical Village for a vibrant, immersive discussion of The Scarlet Letter's themes and historical context.
Set in the 17th-century Puritan world of Boston, Massachusetts, Nathaniel Hawthorne's American classic tells the story of Hester Prynne, the mother who refuses to reveal the identity of her illegitimate child's father. Publicly shamed, she must wear a scarlet letter "A" (for adultery) on her clothes as punishment for her sin and her secrecy.
The Book:

The Scarlet by Nathaniel Hawthorne
An ardent young woman, her cowardly lover, and her aging vengeful husband—these are the central characters in this stark drama of the conflict between passion and convention in the harsh world of seventeenth-century Boston. Tremendously moving and rich in psychological insight, this dramatic depiction of the struggle between mind and heart illuminates Hawthorne’s concern with our Puritan past and its influence on American life.
