Join Cheddar the Village Mouse and Mrs. Laura for story time! This monthly program for preschool-aged kids features stories, games, activities, songs, crafts, and snacks that connect with each month’s theme. Themes, stories, and activities are carefully chosen to be age appropriate and help kids have fun while they develop skills and learn about the world around them.

April 29: In the Garden

"Whose Garden is it?" by Mary Ann Hoberman

We will be reading and doing a little gardening of our own! We will create flowers with different numbers of petals out of buttons and play with plastic bugs in a pretend garden. (Please note there is no May program.)

June 3: Colors Colors Everywhere

“Caps for Sale” by Esphyr Slobodkina

We will be practicing scissor skills and making a mosaic craft, sorting and making patterns with jumbo buttons, and drawing with chalk. Snack will be colorful fruit, veggies and crackers. Wear bright colors!

August 5: 1, 2, 3, ABCs

“Apple Pie ABCs” by Alison Murray

We will be making words with magnetic letters and making our favorite numbers or letters out of playdough. We will be making pretend slices of pie for our craft. Snack will be ABC cookies.

What to Expect

When you arrive, please check in inside the Niles-Barnard House (the large white house). A staff member will be there to check you in. There are two bathrooms available inside the building.

The program will begin promptly at 10:30am and we ask that you please silence your cell phones before it starts.

At the end of your program, you are welcome to head into the Village to find Mozzarella (Cheddar's friend). We also suggest you stop by the Main Building (large brick building) to grab a scavenger hunt to complete with your child.

• How do I become a Troy Historical Society (THS) Member? Click here to learn more about becoming a member and to purchase a membership.
• Can I get a refund? No, we do not offer refunds for this program unless we (the Village) cancels or reschedules the program. We will provided credit for a future Cheddar's Preschool Story Time if you provided at least a 24-hour notice. If you are not able to provide a 24-hour notice, we would be happy to convert your registration into a tax-deductible donation and send a receipt upon request.
• Do I need to register in advance? No, but it is helpful for our planning to know how many people are coming. Please call 248-524-3570 to register over the phone if you see registration is closed on our website. You can also plan to arrive early and head to our Main Building (large brick building) after you park to pay. There is a possibility we will be at capacity when you arrive, so we recommend calling first.
• Does my child need to be 2-5 years old to attend the program? No! While the activities will be designed for that age, children of all ages are welcome. You will need to pay the registration fee for any child older than 2 years old and all adults. Children under 2 years old are free.
• My child or I woke up sick. What should I do? Please stay home! Reply to the reminder email we sent you or call us at 248-524-3570 before the program to let us know. With advance notice, we can give you credit to apply to a future Cheddar's Preschool Story Time program.
• What happens if I’m running late? Should I still come? Yes! This hour-long program has lots of activities and includes admission to the Village. So even if you miss some of the program, you can still enjoy the Village.
• I registered online, but I have friends/family that want to join. The more the merrier! They can pay at the door when they arrive.
• Can I bring a stroller or a wagon? Yes! We have a paved sidewalk throughout the Village. You are welcome to take the strollers and wagons inside the buildings (each one has a ramp entrance), and we ask that you are mindful about the spaces inside when driving the stroller or wagon through. Changing tables are available in General Store restrooms, and we have quiet spaces through the Village if needed.
• Will food or drink be available? Yes! A snack (vegetable and a starch or protein) is included with Cheddar Preschool Story Time. If you or your child has food related allergies or restrictions, please note them on your registration form. You are also welcome to bring a bottle of water, other snacks, or a picnic lunch to enjoy outdoors at the picnic tables after the program. Please note we are a peanut free facility.
• Will I be able to explore the rest of the Village? Yes! Registration fees for Cheddar's Preschool Story Time include admission into the Village.
• Can I bring my dog? Only service animals are allowed at the Village. We strive to make sure everyone feels safe and comfortable, so please leave your pets at home.
• Should I still come if it is raining or snowing? Yes! This program takes place entirely indoors, so please come as long as you feel comfortable with the weather. We do monitor the weather and will adjust our programs as necessary.

Parking & Directions

Troy Historic Village is located at 60 W. Wattles Road, Troy MI 48098 (northwest corner of Wattles and Livernois). There are two parking lots at the Village and you can park in either one. After you park, head inside the Niles-Barnard Building (the large white house) to check in. We will have signs to direct your path.
