This month’s theme is Rail Trails! Rail Trails are hiking/biking paths that are built on old abandoned railroad corridors. In May, we’ll walk on paths where the Grand Trunk Western and Michigan Central Railroads once ran.

May 2, 6pm: Paint Creek Trail, Rochester
Park at Rochester Municipal Park, 400 6th Street, Rochester (intersection of 6th & Pine)
Gather up near the large sundial by the duck pond, and we’ll walk through the park to head west along the Paint Creek Trail. We’ll cross Tienken Rd. to visit the trailside Moultrie Pollinator Garden, then head back. Optionally, you can then visit the Rotary Gateway Park and Children’s Garden behind the Rochester Hills Library for added distance! Distance: 1. 5 – 4 miles.

May 9, 6pm: West Bloomfield Trail, West Bloomfield
Park at West Bloomfield Woods Nature Preserve, 4655 Arrowhead Road, West Bloomfield
This walk’s a two-parter! First, we’ll explore the beautiful, shaded trail inside the WBW Nature Preserve. Call it a night or follow the West Bloomfield Trail west past Woodpecker Lake. We’ll turn around at Halsted Rd. and head back. Distance: 2 – 4 miles.

May 16, 6pm: Polly Ann Trail, Orion
Park behind the Orion Center, 1335 Joslyn Road, Orion
Pull into the driveway for the Orion Center—then keep driving! There’s a parking area just for Polly Ann Trail users at the back. We’ll follow this pretty rail trail south, with options to turn around at Greenshield, Waldon, or not until we hit Joslyn Road again, depending on how far you want to walk! Distance: 1.2, 2.4, or 4.4 miles.

May 23, 6pm: Macomb Orchard Trail (and also Clinton River Trail!), Rochester/Shelby Twp.
Park at Suburban Ice Rochester, 52999 Dequindre Road, Rochester
From the ice rink, we’ll follow the sidewalk south on Dequindre to pick up the Macomb Orchard Trail at its Dequindre Road crossing (look for the big barn over the road!). We’ll follow the trail east to 24 Mile, then turn back. Call it a night or continue walking west—you’ll be on the Clinton River Trail! We’ll visit the Heron Rookery before turning around.  Distance: 1 – 2.5 miles.

May 30, 6pm: Clinton River Trail, Pontiac
Park at Beaudette Park, 786 Orchard Lake Road, Pontiac
Meet in the parking lot on the east edge of the baseball diamond (it’s one of the first lots you’ll pass, look for the picnic shelter). We’ll exit the park and follow the Clinton River Trail to Telegraph Road. Turn around at the pedestrian bridge for a total of about 1 mile or continue across to follow the trail until the Orchard Lake Rd. crossing. Back at the park, call it a night or follow the park road down to the boat launch for added mileage. Distance: 1, 2.8, or 3.75 miles.
