This month we’ll visit “Fan Faves,” a roundup of some favorite Thursday Walking Group routes, plus a route featuring a “fall fave”—a Michigan cider mill!
September 5, 6pm: Innovation Hills Park, Rochester Hills
2800 W. Hamlin Road, Rochester Hills (north side of Hamlin between Crooks & Adams)
This unique park has a combination of wooden boardwalk and paved trails that wind through the woods, along the Clinton River, and over interesting water features. Gather up in front of the playground entrance (looks like a big log/circle). Distance: 1.5 – 3 miles.
September 12, 6pm: Stage Nature Center, Troy
6685 Coolidge Hwy., Troy (west side of Coolidge, between South Blvd & Square Lake Rd.) Discover the beauty of marsh lowlands, upland forests, grassy knolls, and thickets. Listen for the calls of native birds and be soothed by the calming sounds of the Rouge River headwaters as they trickle over rocks near the trails. Paths are a mix of woodchip, dirt, and boardwalk and we’ll have a couple of hills to climb! Distance: 1.5 – 3 miles.
September 19, 6pm: Royal Oak Public Library, Royal Oak
222 East Eleven Mile Road, Royal Oak (free parking up to 2 hours in the 11 Mile Parking Structure, directly west of the Library)
Gather up in the Centennial Commons plaza, right behind the Royal Oak Public Library—look for the large sculpture of a man and woman rising up above the stars, and we’ll meet there. Titled “Star Dream Fountain,” this sculpture was one of Marshall Fredericks’s last public works. Our route over flat, paved sidewalks also takes us past Royal Oak’s War Memorial, the Royal Oak Women’s Club, and historic Baldwin Theater, now home to Stagecrafters. Distance: 1.4-2.3 miles.
September 26, 6pm: Chief Gene Shepherd Park, Shelby Twp. (& YATES CIDER MILL!) 2452 23 Mile Road, Shelby Twp. (east of Dequindre)
Park at Gene Shepherd Park and we’ll gather up near the tennis courts at the northwest end of the park. From there, we’ll follow a scenic, unpaved, and moderately challenging trail through the woods, pick up the Yates Trail that runs along the old canal, and follow it to Yates Cider Mill for an optional stop before heading back. Distance: 2 miles.
