Leadership Troy was organized in 1993 as a component of the Troy Community Foundation (now the North Woodward Community Foundation.) In past years Leadership Troy has facilitated Public Forums on important topics including the Troy Transit Center, The Future of the Troy Public Library, Arts in Troy, Green Design, Wireless Oakland, Technology and You, and Programs that Work for Vulnerable Youth. The members and sponsors of Leadership Troy also host an annual Community Awards Banquet held during the first week of November.  At the event outstanding volunteers are recognized; corporate citizens and local businesses are commended; and the Distinguished Citizen of the Year is honored.

The tradition of naming a Distinguished Citizen was begun in 1969 by the Troy Chamber of Commerce.  “The Distinguished Citizen Award honors residents who have improved the quality of life in Troy through civic and philanthropic acts and made significant contributions through involvement in local organizations. The award acknowledges those who selflessly support an individual, group, church, school, neighbor or others, and positively impact the health, welfare, and safety of the Troy Community”, said Jim Cyrulewski President of Leadership Troy in a recent Troy Times article.

On November 4, 2015, Leadership Troy will host the 47th Annual Community Awards Banquet where Rhonda Hendrickson will be recognized as this year’s Distinguished Citizen. Rhonda has been an active participant in many community organizations including Cub and Boy Scouts, Schroeder Elementary School PTO, Troy High School Theatre Ensemble, Niles Alternative High School, Friends of the Troy Library, Citizens to Save the Troy Library, Birmingham Area Senior Council, and GETGOV-Understanding Troy’s Local Government Partnership with Community Organizations.

To commemorate the City of Troy’s 60th Anniversary in 2015, we will publish a different story each day that highlights a person, discovery, or event that occurred locally, regionally, nationally, or even globally between 1955 and 2015 and that helped shape our lives and our community. We will try to post stories on important anniversary dates, but we also realize that dates are less critical than content and context. We will include the facts related to controversial stories, allowing our readers to form their own opinions. We invite you to read and comment on the stories. Your suggestions for topics are also welcome and can be posted on our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/TroyHistoricVillage. You can also email stories or ideas to the 365 Story Editor at ed@thvmail.org.
