The first ambulances in Troy Township were purchased by William Price and garaged at the Price Funeral Home. It may sound a bit odd, but when a resident needed an ambulance, they called the funeral home. Life support services were provided by trained volunteer firefighters of the Troy Fire Department until 1969. At that time the fire department operated from Stations 1, 2, and 3. Station 4 opened in 1970.

As the City of Troy grew and the need for life support service increased, the City elected to use professional Emergency Medical Service (EMS) providers. Three companies, including Suburban, Community Ambulance Service, and Alliance Mobile Health have provided this service.

Alliance Mobile Health was awarded Troy’s EMS contract in 2003 and this company still responds to 911 calls today. Volunteer firefighters still respond to medical emergencies if there is a need for specific services such as extrication, technical rescue, or hazardous materials clean-up.

To commemorate the City of Troy’s 60th Anniversary in 2015, we will publish a different story each day that highlights a person, discovery, or event that occurred locally, regionally, nationally, or even globally between 1955 and 2015 and that helped shape our lives and our community. We will try to post stories on important anniversary dates, but we also realize that dates are less critical than content and context. We will include the facts related to controversial stories, allowing our readers to form their own opinions. We invite you to read and comment on the stories. Your suggestions for topics are also welcome and can be posted on our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/TroyHistoricVillage. You can also email stories or ideas to the 365 Story Editor at ed@thvmail.org.
