Blacksmithing Classes

The Village offers classes in traditional blacksmithing in our Wagon Shop. Working under the guidance of Resident Metalsmith Rose Weiss, students practice 19th century forging techniques to create unique works of art. Space is extremely limited; advance registration required. Join us this spring for:

 

Basic Blacksmithing Level 1

Saturdays, 10am-12pm: 5/6, 5/13, 5/20, 6/3, 6/10, 6/17 (no class May 27) 

No room left in this session, however, a summer session will be available. Dates coming soon.

Experience the art of blacksmithing as it was in the 1850s with this six-week introductory course. Build a coal fire, work at an anvil and operate a forge.  Discover how malleable iron can be as you make your own hand trowel while learning 9 basic hand forging techniques. Ages 12 to adult. Price: $250/student; includes materials and 12 hours of instruction. No prerequisite.

 

Basic Blacksmithing Level 2

Sundays,  1pm-3pm: 5/14, 5/21, 6/4, 6/11, 6/18 6/25 (no class May 28)

Build upon the skills you learned in Basic Blacksmithing Level 1 with this six-week course. Forge a pair of tongs as you learn the technique of shouldering and take on the challenge of creating mechanical movement with mating parts. Ages 12 to adult. Price: $250/student; includes materials and 12 hours of instruction. Prerequisite: Basic Blacksmithing Level 1.

 

Anvil Time Blacksmithing

Choose from:

Wednesdays, 10am-12pm: 4/19, 4/26, 5/3, 5/10 OR

Thursdays, 4pm-6pm: 5/4, 5/11, 5/18, 5/25 OR

Saturdays, 1pm-3pm: 4/22, 4/29, 5/6, 5/13

Hone the skills you acquired in Basic Blacksmithing by working on a project of your choice. Come to class prepared to discuss your ideas for a project to work on over four weeks. Ages 12 to adult. Price: $160/student; includes 8 hours of instruction, some materials may be extra. Prerequisite: Basic Blacksmithing Level 1.

 

Blacksmithing Sampler

Choose from:

Saturday April 29, 10am-12pm OR Sunday May 21, 10am-12pm

No room left in the April 29 session, however, May 21 is still available.

Step alongside the Village forge and discover what it’s like to ‘make the anvil ring!’  Learn 4 basic hand forging techniques while making your own square nail as it was done centuries ago. Ages 10 to adult. Price: $40/student; includes materials and 90 minutes of instruction. No prerequisite.

 

Adult-Child Blacksmithing

Sundays, 10am-12pm: 4/23, 4/30 and 5/7

No room left in this session, however, a summer session will be available. Dates coming soon.

Together you and your buddy will hand forge a spoon using 1850s blacksmithing methods. Learn 4 basic techniques together with this fun, three-week introductory course. Ages 8 to adult. Price: $180/one adult and one child; includes materials and 6 hours of instruction. No prerequisite.
